Robert Sibley

October 23, 1926 — March 10, 2019

CARMEL – Robert O. Sibley, 92, died on March 10, 2019 after a brief illness. He was born October 23,
1926 in Bangor, the son of Frank and Sarah (Reed) Sibley.

Robert was raised in Bangor until his mother passed when he was 4. He and a brother went to the
Bangor Children’s Home, where he remained for several years, until he moved to Vanceboro to live with
his father and siblings.

In 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Alaska, and participated in the Battles of
Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Robert went on to spend 17 years working for Maine Central Railroad, followed
by Emery Waterhouse, and Trustworthy Hardware Store where he delivered hardware supplies to stores
in small towns, making friends everywhere he went. He entertained many with his stories of his
childhood experiences at the orphanage, adventures in Vanceboro and the war. He was known for having a special gadget for any job and if he couldn’t get it at the store, he built it.

Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Gould) Sibley; son, Robert R. Sibley; daughter, Susan
Garland and husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Idris Lee; grandchildren, Shad, Renee, Joshua, and Reed;
seven great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Galen Sibley; many nieces and
