BANGOR – Robert Johnson Jr., 58, Wednesday, November 4, 2020, God, in his infinite wisdom, chose another of his children to come home. Robert passed away at his home of natural causes after a courageous battle with stage 4, Metastatic Breast Cancer. He was born September 23, 1962 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Robert Sr. and deceased, Priscilla Lee Johnson.

Robert attended elementary school and JHS in Queens, NY, and Francis Lewis HS, also in Queens, until his enlistment in the US Army. He also received certifications from Hudson Valley Community College in Substance Abuse Counselor courses, and attended EOC and received a certification in Culinary Arts.
Robert was extremely proud of his military career. He served at Ft. Hood in Texas, and in Germany from 1980-1986. He received an Honorable Discharge and medals and ribbons for Multi-Channel Equipment Operations, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and an Expert Badge in Hand Grenade and Rifle. In the past 25 years Robert worked in the food industry. He was Head Chef at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY, and then cooked for The Weathervane Restaurant in Belfast, ME, The Chocolate Grill and Irving Big Stop, both in Searsport, ME.

He was very involved with the Bangor Area Recovery Network, where he volunteered for many years. He was also known for his Service Work with Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous in Queens, NY, Albany, NY, and the greater Bangor area. In Albany, he was Residential Manager at Project Lift. He believed in his soul that Alcoholism and Addiction are treatable diseases. “We do recover, there is a solution,” he could always be heard saying. He was beloved by the recovery community here in Maine, and will always be remembered for cooking at all functions, barbequing in the summer, and greeting newcomers at the BARN entry.

Robert was devoted to his family. His memory will be cherished by his sons, Robert Johnson III and his wife, Lisa, of Justin, Texas, Rashaad Johnson and his wife, Destina, of Waco, Texas, and his daughter, Shawn-Nee Johnson, of Bucksport, Maine.

He leaves behind his five grandchildren, Gary Kane Johnson – eleven years old, Malia Johnson – eight years old, Kameron Johnson – seven years old, and Robert Blayze Johnson – 5 years old, Rashaad Johnson Jr., 21 months old. Family that will cherish his memory are his father, Robert Johnson Sr., of Albany, NY; sisters, Lee Ann Johnson, Corrine Johnson, and Cheryl Johnson, of Albany, NY, L’Tanya Gatling, of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, Zachary Johnson, of Queens, NY; ex-wife, Ruth Johnson, of Belfast, Maine; ex-wife, Angela Johnson, of Waco, Texas. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 21, at The Bangor Area Recovery Network/BARN, 142 Center St., Brewer, ME 04412.
