Raymond Lester Phillips, 94, of Old Town Maine passed away at the Maine Veterans home on January 25, 2016 with his family by his side.
Born in Brewer Maine on June 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Frank and Virginia Washburn Phillips. He was educated in Brewer public schools. As one of 10 children, he learned a strong work ethic at a young age, selling newspapers and doing farm work to help support his family.
He met Maida Tweedie of Palmyra Maine, and the two were married in 1941. They enjoyed 53 years together.
Ray was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Marine Corps with the Fifth Marine Division in the Pacific. He was a survivor of Iwo Jima.
After the war he lived in Pittsfield Maine and worked there in the feed mill. He moved his family to Groton CT. in 1952 and worked at the Electric Boat shipyard and Pfizers. In 1962 he moved his family back to his native Maine and began driving truck for Allied Van Lines. He drove truck coast to coast until he retired. After his retirement Ray volunteered for Project Ride for several years, driving clients to their various appointments.
He was an avid gardener throughout his life. He enjoyed taking road trips. He was a good cribbage player and enjoyed putting puzzles together. He was an honest man who believed in hard work and helping your neighbor. He also enjoyed Sunday afternoon picnics with his family
He leaves one brother, Gary Phillips, of Niantic CT. , his children, Barbara Lufkin of Hinsdale MA., Connie (David) Webb of Alton ME, Roberta Fitzgerald of Orono ME, John (Karen) Phillips of Winterport ME , Richard (Wendy) Phillips of Biddeford ME, and Mary Parker of Brewer ME. He also leaves his beloved companion of 14 years, Gail St Louis of Old Town ME, 17 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren and several loved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Maida Tweedie Phillips, his eldest daughter, Joyce Eland, granddaughter Amy Parker, great grandson Caleb Shoopman, his brothers Carroll and Roland Phillips, sisters Geneva Stearns, Betty Tozier, Rosemary Rowell, Sally Lamb, Jean Buzenski and Donna Thompson.
Burial will be in the spring at Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
The family wishes to thank St. Josephs Hospice and the caregivers at the Veterans home for their wonderful care and concern.
