Elizabeth “Betty” M. nee Lobley Goss R.N. D.D.D., left this life on June 19, 2016, at her home in Otis. She was born in Bangor on June 6, 1934, the only child of Raymond D. and Laura (Lumsden) Lobley.
Betty attended St. John’s Grammar School and graduated from John Bapst High School in 1952, and from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Betty loved being an R.N. She had the opportunity to work in operating room and emergency rooms in Maine, New Hampshire, California, Hawaii, and North Carolina.
She returned home to Maine in 1971 and worked in various positions at Bangor Mental Health Institute, from Charge Nurse on the Acute Care Unit, to assistant to the superintendent. Upon the death of Joseph Saxl, she was acting superintendent until a new one was hired. She moved to Ellsworth area in 1984, and was Director of Nurses at the Agape House, and ICF/INR which was renamed to Birchwood Living Center in 1991.
She retired in 1997. She became a member of the board of directors in 1998 and in 1999 became the president of the board of directors. Betty never did fully retire, but went on training CNAs giving in-services, and for many years taught CRMA classes and certified a large number of residential medication aids. She loved teaching.
She also loved sailing and white water canoeing with her husband, Ken. Betty also enjoyed singing, playing guitar, knitting, reading, canning veggies, and doing crossword puzzles with her special friend, Sandy French.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Kenneth Goss Sr.; daughters, Dawn Filtz of Bangor and husband Keith, Kristina Goss of Bangor; son, Robert Arey and wife, Ellen of Brewer; grandchildren, Karin Green of Bangor, Aaron Lobley and wife, Bree of Glenburn, Garrett Wozneak of Bangor, Paula Arey of Brewer, Sarah Elder of Bangor, and Alexx Arey of Glenburn; great-grandchildren, April, Nicole, Aaron, Kara, and Madison; stepchildren, Karan Smith and husband R.G. of St. Albans, Angela Goss of Bangor, Ken Goss Jr. of Bangor, Christopher Goss and wife, Jennifer of Brewer; step-grandchildren, Allen, Alisha, Jeremy, Julia, Makayla, and Deserae; several great-grandchildren; beloved cousins, Sallie Brooks, Pat Saunders; and her oldest friend, Bev MacClusky, whom she met in Kindergarden.
Betty was predeceased by her parents; her daughter, Sydney Sauce, and her first husband, S.P. Arey.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor on (date), at (time). Following the Funeral Mass, relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the parish mall.
