Martaine Lapin

May 15, 1932 — July 30, 2020

ORONO - Martaine John L. Lapin, 88, passed away peacefully July 30, 2020, at his Orono home. Mart was born May 15, 1932, in Dallas, Texas, the son of J. M. and Olga H. Lapin. He resided in Kilgore, Texas until moving to Maine in 1987 with his wife, Mary.

Mart earned his Associate’s Degree from Kilgore College, his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, his M.A. from the University of Texas at Tyler, and his S.J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He practiced law in Kilgore for 32 years, and was Municipal Court Judge for the City of Kilgore for 26 years.

Upon moving to Maine, Mart was employed by Stewart Title Guaranty Company in Portland and Bangor as an underwriter, Director of Marketing and State Underwriting Counsel, and as manager of Penobscot Title Company. He subsequently worked for a Bangor law firm, then opened his own title company which he operated until 1997, when he became co-owner of Gateway Title of Maine. In 2004, he founded North Atlantic Business Group providing business consulting. However, he closed his company in 2006 in order to devote more time to Oncology Support Foundation, a nonprofit he had founded in 2005 to help cancer patients. He served as board chairman until 2007; the organization is now part of Northern Lights Healthcare Charities as the Oncology Support Project.

In 2006, Mart received the Community Support Award from CancerCare of Maine for his work with cancer patients in the community. In 2009, he received the Terry Fox Award at the Run for Hope. In 2017, he received the American Cancer Society New England Division Sandra C. Larabee Volunteer Values Award. As part of his service to the community, he was active in Orono-Old Town Kiwanis for many years, and served as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee of Eastern Maine Medical Center and Acadia Hospital.
Mart was an avid gardener. He and Mary, his wife of 47 years, spent many hours designing and tending the gardens surrounding their historic Orono home and enjoyed observing the diverse wildlife that visited the yard. They also made a place in their hearts for several beloved rescue dogs over the years.

In addition to his wife, Mart is survived by his daughter Sheri Lapin of Houston, Texas, and several cousins. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice for the care they gave during Mart’s last illness.

Contributions in Mart’s memory may be made to Cancer Care of Maine, 133 Whiting Rd, Suite 1, Brewer, ME 04412. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
