Margaret (Peggy) Howard Masterman
On the evening of January 31, 2022, Peggy passed away from complications caused by Multiple Sclerosis. Her husband and son were with her at home on Cold Stream Pond in Lowell, Maine. She was 72 years old.
Peggy was born in Bangor, Maine on November 20, 1949, the first daughter of Eunice (Folsom) and Roger Howard, Sr. of Orrington, Maine.
She grew up in a home next door to the Howard dairy farm in Orrington. She attended Orrington primary and middle schools and Brewer High School, graduating in 1968. She had several aunts and uncles and many cousins nearby and enjoyed a wonderful family upbringing. She enjoyed her times at her Aunt Barbara and Uncle Wendall’s camp on Phillips Lake, her Aunt Jo and Uncle Jack’s hunting camp on the airline road and visiting her Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Uno in Massachusetts where he would take her flying in his small airplane. She was also active in the Order of Rainbow for Girls, becoming Worthy Advisor in her local chapter.
In the mid-1960s, her parents built a tent platform and eventually a small cabin on Schoodic Lake in Lakeview, Maine. That is where she met her husband to be, John, in 1965. They were married in their senior year in college in January 1972.
Peggy attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1972 with a BA in Journalism. She was on the Maine Campus Newspaper staff, the Editor-in-Chief of 1972 Prism Yearbook and 1972 All Maine Woman. She was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority both as a student at Maine and as an alumni in Sacramento, California.
Her working career included being an editor for a defense contractor in northern Virginia, Manager of United European American Travel Club in Sacramento, California, and a sales representative selling and distributing gifts, coffee, and cigarettes in northern California, before she retired in 1992.
Her marriage to John was rich with shared adventures. As avid sports fans they enjoyed sports live and on TV, she loved baseball, especially her favorite Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants. She loved going to Giants games with her friends Cheryl and Kathy (the MLB girls). They enjoyed the San Francisco 49ers football team and were Sacramento Kings NBA season ticket holders, front row center court, for over 20 years. Her loud whistle was well known to all. They loved motor home and boat trips to Univ. of California college football games and parties with friends Karl, Beth, Rosemary, Bill, Sue, Clint, Kori, and Brian They enjoyed many 4th of July celebrations at Incline Village on Lake Tahoe. They also spent many happy hours on trips in the Sacramento River and delta waterways on their cabin cruiser. She was especially happy when their son Josh was with them on their adventures.
Peggy loved their travels and especially enjoyed spending time on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, enjoying a home in Princeville they shared with friends for several years. Peggy and John lived several months each year beginning in 2003 at their home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and gained permanent Mexican resident status in 2013. Favorite travels included, sailing in the US and British Virgin Islands, sailing in French Polynesia with dear friends Karl and Beth, a sail/cruise the Mediterranean from Lisbon to Istanbul with friends Karl, Beth, Bill and Sue, a safari and extensive touring of South Africa with dear friends Tom and Betty, several cruises and tours of Alaska, a train trip around British Columbia and a cruise and extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand with friends Tom and Betty, trips home to Maine and visits to friends Nancy and Will’s cranberry bogs in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Peggy was a devoted and loving mother to her son John (Josh). She enjoyed every moment she spent with him, birthday parties, youth sports, trips in the motor home and cabin cruiser, sailing in Virgin Islands, and his visits to Kauai and Cabo. She was so happy and proud when he graduated from the University of Maine. She loved being a grandma!
Peggy had many close friends and cousins, all of whom she loved very much, especially her college friend, sorority sister and Maid of Honor Sherry (Shashe) Ranta and her dear cousin and friend Elizabeth (Liz) Howard Bicknell.
