BANGOR & GRAND MANAN, NB – Lillian B. (McDowell) Purton, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 24, 2018, at an Augusta healthcare facility. She was born June 23, 1928, in the Grand Harbour Lighthouse (Ross Island), Grand Manan, NB, Canada, the daughter of Lighthouse Keeper Harry E. and Sadie B. (Tidd) McDowell. The eighth of nine children, she had many happy memories of growing up in the lighthouse.
After graduating from high school in Grand Harbour, Lillian went on to earn a diploma in nursing from Chipman Memorial in St. Stephen, NB. Lillian met her husband of nearly 50 years, Frederick H. Purton, during her nursing school years and they were married in Saint Andrews, NB Aug 6, 1948.
Fred and Lillian moved to Baltimore, MD in 1952, then settled in Maine where they raised their family. Lillian was known for her skills in sewing, knitting and cooking. She had a very keen mind and enjoyed reading about and discussing current events. Her gift of hospitality made everyone feel welcomed, loved and special. Lillian took special delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frederick H. Purton; eight brothers and sisters; and daughter-in-law, Jill L. Purton. Surviving are a daughter, Roslyn Scott and husband, Dr. Steven Scott of Tampa, FL; a son, Allan F. Purton of Sidney; five grandchildren, Carissa and husband, Rob, Jessica, Michelle and husband, Charles, Matthew, and Thomas; six great-grandchildren, Macey, Emma, Brody, Max, CJ and James; and several nieces and nephews.
A private service and interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Lillian in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Maine Medical Rehab and LTC at Glenridge Activities Program Fund, 40 Glenridge Dr, Augusta ME 04330.
