Lawrence Lane

February 1, 1930 — September 5, 2024

Bangor and Calais, Maine

Lawrence Robert Lane 94, passed peacefully on September 5, 2024, at Stillwater Health Care in Bangor. Larry was born to Doris (Doten) Olsson and L. Stuart Lane in 1930. He was raised in Baring and Red Beach, Maine.

Larry graduated from Calais Academy in 1947 and St. Stephen Business College in 1948.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War. His first jobs were at Gibson Motors and Dead River Oil Company in Calais.

Larry bought a lot on Nash’s Lake in 1957 before there was a road to the property. With his future brother-in-law, Carl Ross, they moved lumber to construct camps by floating it to the site on a small boat. He married Mary Ross in 1961 and had two children. The family and extended family enjoy the camps to this day.

Later, Lawrence worked for the State of Maine Department of Labor, Calais office helping people find jobs or file for unemployment compensation. He retired in 1986 allowing Mary and Larry to begin spending summers at Nash’s Lake and winters in Winter Haven, Florida. Larry looked forward to birdwatching with a local Florida club on Thursdays and its members became his lasting friends. Larry and Mary have resided in Bangor, near family, for the past two years.

Larry was an avid bird watcher, amateur astronomer, cribbage player, antique bottle collector, Jeopardy enthusiast, nature lover, Star Trek fan, piano player, Nash’s Lake brush trimmer/pothole filler, and reader of science fiction books. He enjoyed learning and sharing interesting information; he was a natural teacher.

Larry deeply loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ross Lane, a daughter Carolyn Lane Vose and husband Stephen of Hermon, a son Steven Lane and wife Nancy of Gorham, two grandsons, Jamison and Eric Lane, a brother Hazen Olsson of Meddybemps and Florida, and many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and long-time friends.

There will be a gathering to remember Larry at The Villa, 321 Stillwater Ave. Bangor, Maine at 2:00 -4:00 pm on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

There will be a graveside Celebration of Life at the Red Beach Cemetery in Calais, Maine at 11:00 am Sunday, September 15, 2024, followed by a reception.

Alzheimer’s may have taken his memory, but Larry’s good humor, friendliness, and love of people stayed with him all his days. Larry frequently said, “We’re having a good life!”

Those who wish may donate to My Friend’s Place, 703 Essex Street, Bangor, Maine, 04401, one of Larry’s favorite places.
