John Lyman

December 12, 1924 — October 31, 2014

John Robert Lyman of Orono and Steuben Maine died peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a short illness.

He wrote: “John Lyman died recently. He contributed his share to damage by the human enterprise for about nine decades. Ere to the winds’ twelve quarters he takes his endless way.”

John, professor of Mechanical Engineering, taught at the University of Maine in Orono from 1948-1991. He touched the lives of many students and taught many skills besides engineering. In retirement he learned Latin and enjoyed his poetry. He loved his family, birds, words, opera, the outdoors, and pondering the mysteries of life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Wowie Lyman; son and daughter-in-law Tracy and Barbara Lyman of Winter Park CO; son and daughter-in-law Nick and Edith Lyman of Bar Harbor ME; daughter Mary Lyman of Bar Harbor Maine; daughter Libby Lyman of Descanso CA; and three grandsons Eric Lyman of Washington DC; Gordon and Wade Lyman of Bar Harbor ME.

There will be a celebration walk commemorating his life at 1:00 pm on Wednesday November 5 at Brownie Park, Orono Maine. Reach the Park by parking at the parking lot on the corner of Bennoch Road and Noyes Drive. Follow the trail 100 yards to the river, turn right and the park is 100 yards ahead.
