Galen Salisbury

March 2, 1929 — August 7, 2022

VEAZIE – Galen Frederick Salisbury, 93, passed away August 7, 2022, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 2, 1929, in Brewer, the son of Frederick S. and Beatrice K. (Moore) Salisbury.

Galen moved to Otis with his family, then to Bradley where he grew up. He attended Old Town High School Class of 1947. Following school, he joined the United States Navy and served for 3 ½ years just as the war ended; much of his service was aboard ship in the waters off Japan. He met Gloria Avery, the love of his life, and they married after his years of service in 1950. Galen attended Husson College for two years and was employed at James W. Sewall Company in Old Town for 28 years. Later, he belonged to the Maine Association of Assessors and worked in the cities of Brewer and Belfast in the Assessing Department for a total of 9 years. He retired in 1991. In Masonry, Galen was proud to be past Master of The Star in The East Lodge #60 A.F. & A.M., of Old Town, a member of the Belfast Curling Club (brusher), and a member of The Board of Selectmen for the Town of Milford where he and Gloria raised their family. He loved woodcarving, which he did for many years, creating many gifts for friends and family. He also loved driving and, after retirement, drove for several local car dealerships transporting new vehicles to various New England companies or bringing new cars to Maine.

Galen was also an avid outdoor man with a deep love for the Maine woods and waters. The family has had a camp at Beech Hill Pond since the children were babies. He loved fishing and hunting and had many adventures in and around Mt. Katahdin at Baxter State Park, the Allagash Wilderness, Greenfield, and Great Works Stream where the family had another cabin for many years. Galen and Gloria loved to travel and lived in several places over their years: Belfast, Lincoln, and Veazie, Maine; Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; Ocala, Florida; and part time in Prescott, Arizona.

In addition to his parents, Galen was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Salisbury; and his sister Gloria Salisbury Hopkins; also, his beloved wife of 64 years, Gloria Avery Salisbury in 2015. Surviving are his three children, son Brian Salisbury of Riverview, Florida (wife, Brenda, son, Toby, and grandson, Teddy Hanson); twin daughters, Susan Salisbury Dupuis of Lincoln, Maine (husband, Steve; daughter, Sarah Hainer (David), children, Ainsley and Isaac Hainer; son, Joshua Dupuis (Erica), children, Harley and Kaydence Walton; son, Brian Dupuis (Autumn), children, Mckenna Nanartowich, Dylan and Garrett Dupuis) and Sally Salisbury of Prescott, Arizona (husband, Brady Bottoms; children, Isaac and Emily Frankel). Galen was a family man and loved spending time with his three children; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2022 in Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Karen Dresser, presiding.
