LILY BAY TWP and BANGOR — Donald F. Shumaker, 90, died peacefully on January 2, 2021 after a brief stay at Togus VA Medical Center's hospice unit in Augusta. He was born in Bangor on December 19, 1930, the son of Francis and Helen (Parker) Shumaker.
He grew up in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School. After high school he served in the US Navy for three years. He worked for many years as a butcher at various stores in the Bangor area and then at the YWCA in Bangor before retiring. He loved hunting, fishing, puttering around the house while listening to country music, and spent many hours making various creations out of wood. His favorite place to spend time was his camp at Moosehead Lake, and he resided there year-round for the last 20 years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lee Shumaker, as well as his brother Roger Shumaker and sisters Barbara Miller and Irene Mills.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Shumaker and his wife Rhonda, of Hampden, and David Shumaker and his wife Diana, of East Corinth; four grandchildren, Jessica Grondin and her husband Matthew, of Cumberland, Ryan Shumaker, of Bangor, Victoria Shumaker, of East Corinth, and Elizabeth Shumaker, of East Corinth; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Shumaker, Charlotte Grondin, and Gregory Clement; two brothers Paul Shumaker, and his wife Gladys, of Orrington, and Louis Shumaker, and his wife Nancy, of Orrington.
Those who wish to remember Don can make donations in his memory to the Moosehead Lake Fisheries Coalition at mooseheadlakecoalition.org. At his request, there will not be a formal service.
