Andrew B.W. MacEwen, 76, passed away, June 29, 2015, at a Bangor hospital after a period of declining health. He was born January 12, 1939 in Bangor, the son of Maynard L. and Aimee Barnes MacEwen.
Andrew was a 1957 graduate of Bangor High School. He attended Harvard University on National Merit and Harvard National Scholarships and graduated in 1962 with a BA in Medieval History and Literature. He worked a period of time in NYC and Boston before moving back to Maine to, along with his parents, operate their antiquarian book business, The Book Barn, in Stockton Springs. He also had a life-long interest in genealogy which began with research that traced the MacEwen family back to Rob Roy in Scotland. He had a remarkable recall of this information and was always pleased to be able to share it with family. He was widely published in American and British Journals of history and genealogy. Andrew was an honorary member of the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy.
Andrew was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Anthony; and several dear aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by two aunts, Joyce Coldwell of Portland and Kathleen (Albert) Mitchell of Eddington; and several cousins, Janelle, Dana, Alan, Maynard, Barbara, Richard, David, Arthur, Peigi, Mary, Warren, Norman, Jane and Julie. Andrew was the godfather to Merillee MacLachlan of Brewer. He also leaves behind special friends, Mirja Johnson, Barbara Stevens, Rocky Spooner, Adrian Burke, Olivia and Anthony Nicholas, Gary Woolson and Scott Concannon.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the Aurora Osborne Cemetery on Rte. 179 in Aurora. A reception of family and friends will be held at 10 McKinley Ave. Orrington, following the service.
